Hunt's Mills Trail

May 29, 2017

Today we decided to stay fairly close to home for our Sunday hike as it is a busy weekend with lots of socializing to do for Memorial Day weekend. Our day started at the Broadway Diner, a favorite right here in East Providence, where the food and service are consistently good. No 'mug shot' of Carol today, she didn't have coffee..what is a guy supposed to do? After breakfast we drove over to Hunt House. This historical site is the location of an old mill and amusement park in day long past, and it is only a couple miles from our house. This is a great place to get in a quick Sunday hike. The trail is only about a mile long, so we did it twice. . .

The water in the river was high and roaring over the falls. I love the sound of moving water in the springtime and it could be heard even in the deep woods when we were well away from the river. The trail here is nicely marked with red markers but I think you would really have to try to stray from the trail as it is so very obvious. Many flowers were in bloom and the birds were very active in the trees. I heard a couple of familiar bird songs and several I just couldn't place.  We also sow many Gypsy Moth caterpillars along the trail. It has been predicted that this will be a bad year for the pests, the can completely defoliate a forest. Let's hope it will not be as bad as they say.

All in all we hiked for about an hour, taking in the sights and sounds of an active springtime in the woods, and to think it is nestled right here in East Providence - another treasure that so few take advantage of. Below is a gallery of images from our day. Click on any image to view larger.
