Harper, the new pup

January 21, 2019

I know it has been a while since I wrote anything here on the blog, but it’s winter and I’m pretty much a lazy bum. So we traveled out to Portland for Christmas with our son Jason and his partner, Kate, and we had a wonderful time. I am working on a travel video of that trip but just have been distracted. . . no real excuse. However we recently got a new family member. Harper, named after the winter storm that just passed, thanks Dan. (the name was my brothers’ idea) But let me start at the beginning.

A page from one of my sketchbooks

Carol has been wanting to get a dog for a long time now and I have been the one who didn’t see the practicality in it as we do travel a lot. During the time that we were visiting with Jason and Kate, they were dog sitting for the neighbors little dog named Brownie. Brownie is a Chihuahua/Dachshund mix. These mixes are called Chiweenies. Well it was the sweetest, cutest and most loving little dog I had ever met and I made the mistake of saying “If I could find a dog like this we would have a dog.” The very next thing I knew, even before I got off Jason’s couch, was that Carol went on line and found this cute little Chiweenie up for adoption at a rescue in Vermont. Carol immediately began to fill out paperwork. We arrived back home on the third of January and Carol continued communicating with pet adoption place in Vermont. Last Wednesday we took a drive and made our way to Williston VT, just outside of Burlington, and met our little Chiweenie for the first. The process was quite simple and it was indeed love at first site. Harper has been an absolute perfect little puppy. We did have one accident in the house but it was all so strange and since that time, no accidents at all.

Harper, the trailer Chiweenie

We figure that Harper is exactly the right size for traveling with our little Vistabule trailer on all of our adventures and be good company along the way. On the 5 hour ride back from Vermont, she was a perfect traveling companion sitting on Carol’s lap and just enjoying the ride. Since then she has been to the store several times and has several different ‘outfits’ — I never thought I would see the day that we would have a dog that is part of the fashion scene. She even wore a Patriots jersey to watch the big game yesterday. Well, we won so maybe the jersey is a good luck jersey and we will have to dress her for the Super Bowl.

Kill the squeaky monkey!

We have also garnered a growing collection of squeaky toys, blankets, beds, harnesses, leashes and collars with more coming in from Amazon tomorrow. She also has all sorts of foods and treats and her vitamins are more expensive that Carol and mine combined. Go figure. But we are happy and delighted to have her in our lives and know she will be happy to share our adventures. And as you can see in the photo above our squeaky monkey infestation has been resolved.

We love her coloring

As you may have guessed Brownie was a brown Chiweenie, Harper however is what is called ‘blue merle’ I believe, what ever the coat is called, she sure is cute. Also she sure is tiny as she only weighs about six pounds and we were told that she is likely as large as she will get. She was eight months old exactly on Saturday, so I am guessing she is pretty close to being full grown anyway. So from now on don’t be surprised if our travel posts also have some focus on Harper as I am sure she is going to be integral to our travels. Here is a few more pictures.
