Morning found us ready to continue our travels north along the California coast. After pulling out from the RV park in Fort Bragg we filled with fuel, checked the map app and headed up route 1. Just out of town we began the the coastal route of twisting and turning and spectacular views once again.
There are some mornings when it is tough to get out of bed.
About thirty miles north of Fort Bragg the road took a turn away from the coast and into the mountains and the beginning of the redwoods. We came to the end of Route 1 near Leggett, CA and joined up with the 101. Soon we left 101 and moved over to the 'Avenue of the Giants'.

This road is truly a gift. The brochure says: "It is a 31-mile portion of old Highway 101, that parallels Freeway 101 with its 51,222 acres of redwood groves. It is by far the most outstanding display of these giant trees in the entire 500-mile redwood belt, and it is accessible to all with convenient services provided along the way. The Avenue of the Giants is surrounded by the Humboldt Redwoods State Park, which has the largest remaining stand of virgin redwoods in the world."

We had a great time driving, stopping and hiking for the next few hours. The redwoods are so very majestic that it defies my ability to describe here what we saw and the way we felt.
Hiking in and around these giants was an amazing experience.
It was a memorable and spectacular afternoon hanging out with the trees. We stopped and hiked several times. Harper kept her nose to the ground smelling all the new smells as we hiked. We continued our route north, through Eureka and and back to the beach, past Clam Beach, Klamath and up the coast to Crescent City.

Just as we left the Avenue of the Giants the first rain drops began to fall. By late afternoon it was raining in earnest, the first real rain we have seen for a month. The coastal highway is just as pretty with the rain softening everything and filtering through the trees.
Road construction makes things interesting. . .
We passed through Crescent City, getting fuel and looking for a restaurant. Unfortunately all the restaurants either were closed or were impossible to park the Doodle so we decided on an evening at home in the Doodle.

The camp was beautiful as we ended up snuggled in amongst the tall trees of the Redwood forest. Harper and I got pretty wet setting up and going for our nightly walk, but in this environment that was just fine.
